Atherosclerosis:The number one killer of humans.

Hypertension has long been recognized as a danger sign for atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and stroke and must be treated. I agree.
  1. Linus Pauling, a great genius of the 20th century, identified the primary and initial cause of atherosclerosis as a relative deficiency of  Vitamin C, as Vitamin C promotes the production of collagen, which strengthens the arterial inner wall. A deficiency thus causes weakness of the arterial intima, leading to the rupture and the subsequent plaque formation,(the initial lesion in atherosclerosis).  This relative Vitamin C deficiency was termed "sub clinical scurvy."  I would agree with Pauling, and think Vitamin C supplement is critical to good health. I take 500-1500 mg per day supplement, and Dr Pauling suggests higher quantities. The following links show excerpts of Pauling, a man whom I knew, and  consider an unrivalled genius.

  4. Dr Eric Westman(from Duke and others) have modified the original Dr Atkins diet approach which identified the harmful aspects of high sugar and carbohydrate(high glycemic) intake, as causing obesity and diabetes, and advocated restriction of sugar/carbohydrates in the diet. I would agree and  think that dietary limits on sugar and carbohydrates(high glycemic index foods), is important for control of weight and fat accumulation, and this can help to prevent Type 2 diabetes. The following link shows the Duke approach to controlling weight, via a modified Atkins approach. I believe this approach will work, and there are other more recent(and radical) refinements to diet, that we will review later.

  7. Dr Lustig, from UCSF, in this excellent lecture, emphasizes fructose as an especially harmful sugar in our diets( from corn syrup and fruits), and thinks this contributes to pediatric(and adult) obesity and diabetes. I would agree, and think this should be severely restricted in our diet.

  8. Dr. Barnard reviews sugar, and then introduces Vegan concepts, which introduces other dimensions of diet, and calls into question dairy products.

  9. The China study, by Collin Campbell, PhD, has shown that higher levels of animal protein, along with animal fat(as opposed to plant protein), intake, are associated with increased atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.and cancer. I would agree that the evidence looks persuasive.

  10. Evidence from Drs Esselstyn and Fuhrman(eg Eat to Live) suggests, that in some cases, atherosclerosis, can even be somewhat reversed, by adapting the China Study diet. I would agree that the evidence for this astounding statement, is very strong and convincing.
